Nobody wants to talk about childhood cancer. It’s too painful. And we get it… we really do.
But without difficult conversations, nothing changes.
We need everyone to be aware of the devastation caused by childhood cancer and the painful reality of the number of children and young people who lose their lives. It is only with awareness that there will be sufficient investment into research, treatment and appropriate support services.
That is why Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is so crucial to us and to all those who are involved in the care and support of children facing cancer. We want to see kinder treatments. We want to see no long-term side effects. We want to see the end of childhood cancer.
Dedicating a whole month to awareness of childhood cancer means that children with cancer are put into the spotlight to be recognised and celebrated.
So often, children undergoing cancer treatment are kept in the background. Some of that is necessarily because they are immunocompromised and need to be kept safe; crowds can be a dangerous place. But some of it is that people are too uncomfortable to face a difficult truth. Too many people want to look the other way when seeing a child who has lost their hair or has an NG tube fitted.
It's time to stop seeing the side-effects and start looking at the amazing children behind them.
We see every day through our work at CWCF the incredible strength and resilience of the children battling this cruel disease. They deserve to be recognised. They deserve to be seen. They deserve for research into cures to be prioritised.
This Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, please help us to be there for all families across East Sussex, Brighton and Hove who are facing the impact of a cancer diagnosis. Until the day that childhood cancer has been beaten, we will be here to stand alongside families as they face this battle.
