Skating the Evening Away

In a piece of perfect planning by Jess (how does she do it?), when the heavens opened on November 1st and drench Eastbourne with torrential rain, our families weren’t worried because they were tucked away warm and dry at My Skateworld in Eastbourne.

We had hired the whole venue just for us, which was really lovely as it gave us a brilliant atmosphere where nobody was worried about looking silly on their skates as they were among friends. It also made everyone feel safer as having a bit more space out on the rink meant we didn’t really have to worry about anyone getting knocked over.

The children had a blast either on their skates or scooters for the younger children among us. Once everyone had worn themselves out on the rink, the wonderful Skateworld team brought out a buffet spread for all to enjoy. We were so impressed by the spread, the food was delicious and so plentiful. Once refuelled our little group wasted no time in heading back out to skate.

While the children, and some of the adults, were off skating, the rest of the adults made the most of the time to mingle and chat. We have heard it time and time again, nobody really understands what dealing with childhood cancer feels like unless they have been through it themselves, so being able to make these bonds between families makes a world of difference.

The children playing together and making connections was a magical sight. For those children who were attending their very first CWCF event, it was a surprise how they were immediately welcomed and accepted into the group and made friends so quickly. It was of course, not a surprise for us. We know that part of the joy of our family events is that our children are so inclusive and willing to embrace newcomers.

Thank you to the entire Skateworld team who were so welcoming, especially the marshals out on the rink who kept a watchful eye on everyone and were there within seconds of any trips or falls to make sure everyone stayed as safe as possible.

We couldn’t do what we do without your help. If you would like to help us put on more events just like this one for our children who have been through so much and really do need time to have fun and feel like normal children again, please consider donating today.
